Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal maintenance through regular dental checkups

Did you know that tartar can develop in as little as twenty-checkupfour hours? All it takes is for plaque to remain on your teeth for that much time. Brushing and flossing daily at home can keep plaque in check and prevent the formation of tartar, also known as calculus, but there are areas of your mouth that will always be hard to clean without the help of a dentist.

Dr. Fowzia Hakym encourages patients with a history of gum disease, or periodontitis, to get regular maintenance cleanings, known as periodontal cleanings, an average of four times a year. At these periodontal treatment appointments, the depth of your gum pockets will be carefully inspected by Dr. Fowzia Hakym and your dental hygienist. Hard-to-clean plaque and calculus will be removed from above and below the gum line.

Your regular dental appointments will include a periodontal cleaning and evaluation, as well as:

  • Diagnostic X-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts and bone loss. X-rays can also help your dental team determine the positions of your teeth and their roots.
  • Examination of existing dental restorations: Your dentist can ensure that the fillings, crowns, etc., that you already have are in good shape.
  • Tooth decay exam: Your dentist will check the surfaces of every tooth for signs of decay.
  • Oral cancer screening: Your dentist will check for signs of oral cancer on your face, neck, lips, gums, tongue, cheeks and throat for signs of oral cancer.
  • Oral hygiene recommendations: Your dentist and dental hygienist will discuss your oral hygiene regimen with you and recommend changes as needed. (Electric toothbrushes, special periodontal brushes, fluorides, rinses, etc.)
  • Teeth polishing: Stains, plaque and calculus that were not removed during tooth brushing and scaling will be targeted during polishing.
